About the Percy J. Power Senate

The Percy J. Power Senate was chartered in 1975 at the Lansing campus of Thomas M. Cooley Law School (now Western Michigan University Cooley), and has seen hundreds of its members matriculate. Currently, we have 33 active members, and we’re constantly growing. More specifically, we’re constantly understanding what the students of Cooley desire with respect to extra-curricular activities. The focus of our events allow them to escape the rigors of the classroom but still develop to be well rounded and prepared for the realities that face graduates upon completing law school and passing the bar. This happens to be an area in which we shine.

Delta Theta Phi as a whole is not specific to one field of law or geographic area of practice, and the Power Senate is only one of the 206 chartered Student Senates in the world. Once initiated, our brothers and sisters become part of membership in an international fraternity with over 136,000 alumni in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and over 42 countries including Australia, Italy, China, Japan, the UK, Bahamas, Israel, and many more. We also cover a wide range of legal practice including civil, criminal, medical malpractice, military, probate, environmental, law librarians, and other areas of law. Some of our alumni chose other careers such as medicine, non-legal teaching, business, sports, and much more. Our distinguished alumni include Supreme Court Justices at both federal and state levels, presidents, authors, congressmen, senators, and more. Because of our near universal presence, our students and alumni know that they have a vast network of fellow Delts on whom they can rely for advice and counsel – simply because we are all united by the same fraternal bond.

The Power Senate is comprised of a group of individual leaders and self motivators.  Our members are involved with virtually every aspect of  Cooley, but we don’t merely attend meetings for different things. More often than not, you’ll see a Delt leading that activity. For the past three consecutive

administrations, the President of the Student Bar Association has been a sister of the fraternity, and two of them had a fellow Delt as her Vice President. Members of the fraternity comprise a significant number on the SBA Senate as well. Additionally, the Chief Justice of the SBA’s Judicial Board is a Delt, as are two of his Associate Justices. Several graduating classes have had Delts as their valedictory speaker, an honor chosen by members of the graduating class itself.

Though this is only the slightest glimpse at our activity level and presence around the school, you should also know that we’re dedicated to the promotion of legal knowledge itself. We have a members-only collection of outlines and supplements, provided by brothers and sisters, many of whom received Certificates of Merit in the respective class. Additionally, a number of our members are not only teaching assistants or legal tutors, but many of us do not stop at the J.D. level; several of our members are currently pure LL.M. students, and so far, nine more have plans to do the joint J.D./LL.M. program.

What really distinguishes the brothers and sisters of Delta Theta Phi is our drive and determination. We all acknowledge and understand that legal education is a monumental undertaking. Our goal is to become part of the historical traditions of the profession of law, and the Power Senate’s personal motto is “tradition demands excellence.” It is for this reason that you can rest assured that if you ask for something to be done by a member of the fraternity, your end product will be nothing less than the best.
